Ensemble “Malaya Zemlya” (Minor Land)

Ансамбль «Малая Земля»

The Malaya Zemlya ensemble was built on the western coast of the Tsemes Bay. On the site of the former suburb of the town - Stanichka, where on a stormy night from February 3 to 4, 1943, a special detachment landed under the command of Major Tsezar Kunikov. For 225 days and nights in fierce battles, Soviet sailors and soldiers defended the bridgehead, which the paratroopers called "Malaya Zemlya" (Minor Land).

On September 16, 1982, a monument-ensemble "Malaya Zemlya" was unveiled in a solemn atmosphere at the site of the landing of the legendary assault force. The symbolic landing ship made of reinforced concrete burst ashore and froze forever in the legendary throw. On the left "side" of the symbolic ship there is a sculptural group "Paratroopers". This nine-meter-high composition of bronze figures of marines is unusual: the author chose for the image the moment when the paratroopers were already preparing to jump. The figures are united by a common rhythm. V. Tsigal well conveyed the mighty impulse of the fighters, their confidence in victory. A bas-relief, carved in granite, depicting episodes of the battles for Malaya Zemlya is deployed on the starboard side of the "ship". The Gallery of Military Glory is located inside the architectural structure symbolizing the landing craft. A solemn multi-flight staircase leads to the bow of the "ship" and then descends. On both sides of it there are symbolic banners made of red polished granite, on which are inscribed the names of the formations and units that took part in the battles on Malaya Zemlya and in the liberation of Novorossiysk. There are also bronze bas-reliefs - portraits of 30 heroes of the Soviet Union who took part in the battles for Novorossiysk.

At the very top of the gallery there is a platform where the picturesque and sculptural composition "Heart" is located. The authors found a capacious symbol connecting the story of the feat of those days with the eternal memory that lives in our hearts. Against the gray background of concrete - like a burst of an artillery shell, a hole with the outline of Malaya Zemlya. It contains a sculptural image of a heart. On the gilded bronze statue there is a laconic inscription: "In memory, in heart - forever." Inside is a cartridge case with photographic film with the names of those killed in the battles for Novorossiysk.

The ensemble was created by the sculptor V. Tsigal, architects Y. Belopolsky, R. Kananin and V. Khavin in 1982. The ensemble "Malaya Zemlya" also includes the monument "Stele" by architects G. Apraksin and T. Bogoyavlenskaya and the memorial exposition "Weapons and military equipment of the period of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", which is represented by wartime relics, samples of weapons and equipment, which took part in the battles for Novorossiysk, as well as a unique collection of anchors of the 17th – 20th centuries.
