Bust of I.E. Repin

Бюст И.Е. Репина

In 1993, during the celebration of the bicentennial of the city of Krasnodar in a park next to the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F.A. Kovalenko, a monument to Ilya Repin, a classic of Russian painting, was inaugurated. But not only the glory of the great artist was the reason for the appearance of the monument. The city played an important role in the artist's life - it was here that Repin made sketches for his famous painting "The Cossacks Composing a Letter to the Turkish Sultan."

In the summer of 1878, Ilya Repin had the idea of creating a painting about the Zaporozhye Cossacks. For several years he worked on this work. In 1888 Repin came to Yekaterinodar "for the free spirit of the Cossacks." In the capital of the Kuban, the artist found colorful images of Zaporozhye Cossacks and made sketches for his future painting. The arrival of the famous artist had a huge impact on the Ekaterinodar intelligentsia. Largely thanks to Repin's patronage, an art school was opened in the capital of Kuban, and friendship with the local collector Fyodor Kovalenko led to the creation of an art gallery. Ilya Repin responded to this important event in the life of the city with a letter and a telegram addressed to the mayor. The text of the message read: “Congratulations. I wish the museum prosperity and enrichment. "

The author of the monument is sculptor Olga Yakovleva. She worked on the image of the famous artist for several years. Of the many options for the bust made, the master chose the one where Repin was captured at a relatively young age, just at the time of his work on the "Cossacks".

The site of the monument - a public garden at the corner of Krasnaya and Sovetskaya streets - was not chosen by chance. The image of the great Russian painter is adjacent to the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F.A. Kovalenko. The artist took part not only in the opening of the museum, but also helped to form its collection.
