Observation Tower on Mount Akhun

Смотровая Башня на горе Ахун

Mount Akhun is the highest mountain in Sochi, located in close proximity to the sea. At the very top of the mountain there is an observation tower, built by order of Stalin. Under Stalin, an all-Union construction project was announced in Sochi, and the rapid development of the resort began. Iosif Vissarionovich often visited Sochi and once visited the mountain. He was so impressed by the views from the mountain that he ordered to build an observation tower there, which, however, he himself never visited.

Where this name "Akhun" came from, no one knows for sure. It is known for sure that this name, like most other geographical names of this area, was given by local tribes long before the Russians came here. Its height is 663 meters. A scenic 11-kilometer green road leads to the top of the mountain. And the higher the rise, the cooler and fresher the air. Along the path there are resting places and even tents with snacks, cafes around the tower are open during the season.

The tower itself is made of rough-cut limestone in the Romanesque style. A spiral staircase leads to the observation deck. The views become more beautiful with every turn! You can admire them through the loopholes. The height of the tower is 30 meters, thus, climbing to the very top, you will see a panorama of mountains, sea, surf line, city from a height of about 700 meters. In good weather, views up to 70 km around.
