View tower on Mount Bolshoy Akhun

Видовая башня на горе Большой Ахун

The name comes from the name of the Ubykh god - Akhyn. However, there is an assumption that the name from the Adyghe means "cattle feed". Others associate the name with the Abkhaz "ahu" - "mountain, hill" and the ancient Ubykh-Abkhaz ethnonym "Akhunaa". According to another version, Akhun (Okhun) means "high dwelling" from the ancient Ab-Khaz language. In Arabic, akhun means "clergyman", among Muslims akhun means "senior mullah".

In 1935, in just 102 working days, the 11-kilometer highway from the coast to the top of the mountain was built. There is an observation tower on the Bolshoi Akhun mountain, built in 1936 according to the project of the architect S.I. Vorobyov. The height of the tower is 30.5 m. It was built of hewn white limestone in the Romanesque style (it took 10 months to build the tower).

It is also known that in the depths of the Akhunsky karst massif there are more than 20 caves. More than 200 species of higher plants grow in the forests, 34 of which are included in the Red Book of Russia. On one of the tops of the massif there are the remains of the medieval Christian temple Maly Akhun.
